Eighth Grave After Dark Charley Davidson Darynda Jones 9781250045652 Books

To understand my point of view, a brief overview of my reading preferences. I prefer a series over a stand alone. And I would rather have the main heroine/hero featured in each book instead of swapping in different couples. I don't mind sexual content unless it seems that's all the book is about. I read mostly from the fantasy/paranormal/romance genres. I'm an avid reader and read around 100 books a year. My favorite authors are:

Karen Marie Moning - both Highlander and Fever series
Nalini Singh - Guild Hunter series
Karen Chance - Cassie Palmer series
Ann Charles - Deadwood series
Darynda Jones - Charlie Davidson series
Ilona Andrews - Magic series
Faith Hunter - Jane Yellowrock series
Laurell K. Hamilton - Anita Blake - 1st 10 books in the series, before it turned into an excuse to write orgies

First let me say that this series has been a favorite of mine. That is what makes this review so disheartening.
The plot was very draggy. Maybe the fact that the entire book took place in one location contributed to that. Nothing much seemed to really happen until the end and then it felt too rushed. Yes, a lot of questions were answered, but it wasn’t handled well. It felt like the author had a check list of things to reveal and she waited until the end to do so. There was very little lead-up to the “answers” and it was one thing quickly followed by another. I never really felt emotionally invested. There was still some of the humor I’ve come to expect. But it felt dialed back.
Even though there was a lot of Reyes and Charlie time – it wasn’t in a good way. To me they seemed more at odds in this book and felt disconnected from each other. A lot of the characters from the previous books made appearances. Although, some of them felt more like a footnote and did not add to the story, but felt more like a distraction from an already chaotic ending.
Character development in this book almost felt like a step backwards. In a well written series, you get to experience the growth of the characters and how they evolve. Charlie has shown no growth in the last couple books in particular. She is actually starting to get on my nerves. In this book she was constantly whining that no one trusted her to handle things but then she’d jump head first into situations and get into trouble. You would think that pregnancy would make her think more about the consequences. Nope. Didn’t slow her down a bit. It’s no wonder no one trusts her.
The ending seems to open up a new direction for the books. But at this point I’m not sure it’s a good direction. I realize this book is not based on reality. But Grime Reapers, Satan and demons are common themes throughout history. The “answers” that were revealed in this book just didn’t feel like they fit with the world has it’s been in this series. We’ll see how it works. I’m hoping the next book is much better.

Eighth Grave After Dark Charley Davidson Darynda Jones 9781250045652 Books Reviews

Charley is ready to drop...a baby that is. So they are hanging out on sacred ground (a convent) all while organizing and having Cookie's wedding. If that isn't enough, hellhounds are outside the gate waiting to shred Charley and her baby...when she comes.

Ms. Jones makes you fall in love with her quirky characters who suffer from fears, coffee cravings and lust. We know that they are willing to do anything to save the innocent and protect those that they love (which keep growing).

Yet this book brings about the big conclusion to the storyline with the birth of baby Beep and sets the store for the future fight between Beep and Lucifer. The ending will take you by surprise and reminds you why you love Charley and Darynda. All the while, taking your emotions through the wringer. A must for paranormal fans!
Dear lord, what did I just read?

It's official the Grave series went off the rails. It started with book 7, which was very disappointing, but this installment just took that disappointment to a whole new level.

First of all, this book is beyond tedious. The first third is one long description of Cookie and Ubie's wedding. An FBI agent shows up with a case. That's it. Then, Charley does some stupid and reckless stuff, again (the trend set in Book 7, in which Charley turns from zany but overall capable PI into a reckless, pigheaded moron; here, she takes stupid risks for no reason literally a day after having her new baby). She lies to Reyes, betrays his trust, AGAIN. He hides things from her, AGAIN. She talks smack to, and about, some people; acts judgmental and self-absorbed; sticks her nose where it doesn't belong; and basically continues the trends set for her character in Book 7, while exhibiting zero personal growth. In fact, she basically takes ten giant steps back, and so does her relationship with Reyes. These two have no connection, no trust. They are not a team. All they do is ogle each other (and yes, we, AGAIN, get nauseating details about how hot Reyes is. Over. and over. And over again). They lust after each other, they have sex, and then they lie, manipulate, and fight with each other. In fact, Charley has gotten so incredibly stupid, pigheaded and reckless, that no one trusts her with any information anymore. Oh and we get a huge cast of supporting characters, most of whom barely get any page time, and make barely any impact.

And then, about 80% in, we get the ending. And what a doozy that is. Wow. It's as if Ms. Jones grabbed every idea she had, threw it in, hit "blend", and then dumped the resulting mess all over the pages. Nothing, and I mean nothing, makes sense. Mr Wong and the hellhounds? Eh? The three bikers - what on EARTH were they doing there? Who? Why? Charley finally gets all her powers, only to realize that Reyes already made all the decisions about their kid and everything else, and despite being a god, she can't protect her own child. They give the child to Reyes's birth parents... they come up with a name for the child that doesn't betray who her parents are.. only to give her Reyes's birth parents' last name. The list goes on.

Honestly, I am flabbergasted that this book has been published. What on earth was everyone thinking? This book (as well as book 7) effectively put an end to the Charley Davidson series as we knew it. What made the first six books so great the snarky humor; the zany yet loyal and capable heroine; the wonderful friendships; a small cast of well fleshed out characters; a sexy romance that was full of promise for both delicious tension and personal growth; and a fun paranormal world and powers that were still grounded in humanity and in everyday life....All of this has been lost. The humor is forced and almost non-existent. Charley has become a self-centered, immature and frankly, stupid bully. She has lost her humility and compassion, and the wonderful friendships are gone. The supporting cast has grown to twice its size and it's become unwieldy. The romance is stale and empty, because, while lust is fun, you need the lovers to grow mutual trust and support. And worst of all, the plot developments are so ridiculous, so over the top, so bombastic, that there is no way to get out of them anymore. If only the author stuck to the heroine's role a the grim reaper, and kept things focused on the original world and mythology, things would have remained manageable, and she could have focused on what really works in the series the characters and their personal growth. Instead, she chose to blow up the world but, I suspect, without much planning or forethought. It almost feels like she lost control over the series and at the same time, lost interest in the story and the characters she created.

This is really a shame, because this series, from books 1 thru 6, was fun, entertaining, and at times, thought provoking. But with book 7 and now, book 8, I no longer recognize anything or anyone in the books. It's as if the heart of the series has been removed completely. So sad. I hope the author chooses to keep her future series short and focus on developing her strengths, rather than - sort of like Charley in this book - charging unprepared into something huge and signaling the Apocalyptic end of the books we knew and loved.
