I'm not sure this is the series for me. Books 1 and 2 held me pretty well, but this book was too much into the dream sequences for me. I found myself skimming pages hoping to find some live action. I will be reading book 4 hoping that this book was just a way for Joanne to come to terms with her powers and that there will be some actual kick ass in the upcoming books. That's the type of character you are led to believe she is, so I'm hoping it gets put into words. So for me, this was only a three star book.

That being said, the writing and editing are excellent. There certainly are no complaints on that front at all. Might be just not my type of reading.

Coyote Dreams, the third book of the Walker Papers, is a solid story with a tighter and better-paced plot than the previous book in the series, Thunderbird Falls. It's far more cohesive and I think it's the best of the first three books.

Without a doubt, C.E. Murphy's greatest strength in this series in particular is fantastic character development. I may not always like Joanne Walker (Siobhan Walkingstick) or the choices she makes, but I still LOVE her as a character. She's so delightfully human, flawed and sometimes petty, petulant, and frustrating. She's also got one of the most amusing internal monologues I've ever read and her sarcastic and biting wit drives the action of the plot. The first person narrative is a perfect vehicle for her character.

Supported by the familiar and spectacular secondary characters - her boss Captain Michael Morrison and her pseudo-paternal influence and robust septuagenarian cab diver Gary in particular - Murphy's Coyote Dreams shines brightest during the continuing development of those interpersonal relationships. And some of my favorite reading ever are any scenes between Joanne and Morrison. Murphy has been absolutely brilliant during every single step of their tense and reluctant relationship.

I believe that the three books, Urban Shaman, Thunderbird Falls, and Coyote Dreams would've been complete as a trilogy - there was satisfying arc of character development and a plot theme that came full circle. That being said, I'm thrilled that the Walker Papers has been continued, and look forward to book four, Walking Dead.
I loved Urban Shaman, and on the strength of that, bought the next 4 books in the series. Book 2 (Thunderbird Falls) was not nearly as much fun, but I enjoyed seeing some of the relationships grow. And, I was willing to move one to Book 3 (Coyote Dreams). Coyote Dreams starts with an explosive amount of energy, giving me hope for the book. But, it just bogs down.
While there is some character growth, so much of the book takes place in some form of vision, dream, etc. that I no longer could recognize what was the action in the book and what was the dream world. And which dream world? How many different worlds, astral plains, Bablyons, Lower and Upper space, Dead Zones, Gardens, Deserts, Tir Na Nog's are there? And where is she now? And how does this fit with her past? And, is her spirit guide really her spirit guide or is it something else?
Frankly, I will read book 4 because I already paid for it and it's waiting there on my . But, I don't expect to buy any more.
This was an interesting idea for a series, but there's just too much rumbling and not enough thunder. And, I still don't believe saving the world revolves around her.
THE PLOT
Joanne's spirit guide Coyote is still missing and she finally gets around to hunting for him. She learns that her flamboyant shamaning in Urban Shaman has had further unpleasant consequences. Something woke up and is not happy.

We meet two new characters, twin brother and sister Mark and Barbara Brag. At the beginning of the novel Joanne wakes up to find Mark is in her bed. Naked. Sorting through memories of the previous day she recalls that seeing Morrison flirt with cute little Barbara was more than Joanne could bear. She drinks way too much and takes Mark home with her. (Don't worry though. For whatever reason (perhaps Mark was too drunk and passed out?) no sex occurred.)

Joanne is smacked in the head with her jealousy of Barbara and Morrison, and makes a giant fool of herself. (Really, giant. I was seriously embarrassed for her.) Once Morrison succumbs to the mysterious sleeping disease that has already felled about half the department, Joanne goes into Morrison's mental garden. There she finally fesses up to her feelings. Hooray! this reader thinks. We get a kiss (even though it's only happening in their minds)! But hold on guys. Not so fast...

Once Joanne wraps up the mystery and wakes everyone up again, she meets with Morrison who offers her a promotion to detective. She knows she can't date her boss... Being Joanne, she takes the job, and the status of her relationship with Morrison is left hanging in Nowhere-land.

MY OPINION
And so I'm left feeling majorly squiffy. I debated waiting longer before writing the review. Perhaps, after my ire faded I'd have a more favorable opinion of the book. Perhaps on a second reading, without the painful bite of acute frustration, I may like the mystery part a lot. But, honestly, my feelings upon closing the book are frustration and annoyance.

So - the verdict if you read this series primarily for the paranormal stuff, you'll likely be pleased. I know little about Native American mythology so Murphy has been able to catch me by surprise a good bit. I do enjoy a book that is hard to predict.

HOWEVER - if you're really enjoying the tension between Joanne and Morrison, and that's a big reason why you read this series... beware. There is no satisfaction to be found on that front in this novel.

I wish I had known before I started reading Coyote Dreams that, despite the teasing promise of relationship growth that Joanne's display of jealousy seemed to suggest was coming, the only progress made is that Joanne admits to herself she really likes him. If I had known that going in, I would not have been so very disappointed by the ending.
