I really enjoyed this book. The concept was original and the locations were so descriptive, one could use the book instead of map for real world navigating. A couple of negative points were the actual villains. Their appearance was rather abrupt and I was confused as to who was who. Also, there was as major plot hole with regards to the trolls weight.I really wanted to give this book 4 stars, but the plot hole was too obvious. Still, I enjoyed the book and would recommend.

Life was fairly unremarkable for Willow (Willy)Tate. She had a Brownstone in New York City, a somewhat boring boyfriend, and a career as a graphic novelist. Until mayhem breaks loose, and Willy is the only one who knows what's really happening. Cue the sexy British secret agent, Grant, and a rather unexpected set of circumstances that force Willy home to the eccentric town of Paumanok Harbor, where special talents are a dime a dozen. Will Willy be able to save the world from an Evil Genius, and come to terms with her own talents?
I found Willy to be a very likeable character, with a lot of hang-ups and fears. Those fears echoed many of my own fears, so I found it easy to relate to her. While the romance added little tension to the overall story, it provides an interesting look at fate versus free will- and what we are willing to believe (or overlook) for the sake of love. I was a little annoyed with the "even though I don't trust you, you're hot, so get in my bed" attitude of Willy. The premise was unique, but a little predictable. Things fell into place a little too easily for my liking. Everyone was in just the right spot, with just the right talent, at just the right time.
Overall, it was a light, enjoyable read, and will probably pick up the sequel.
Single sentence summary Willow has just started a new graphic novel about a giant red troll when she hears a commotion on the street, only to see her graphic novel come to life.
The cover for this book is great! Combined with the title, it looks like a light and probably funny read. Well, I got the light part right. I was expecting more humor from this book but that didn't happen. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it by any means. I was just a little let down because it wasn't real funny. I do see the humor in having a comic come to life but otherwise this ended up being more of a romance than I expected.
Willow sees the giant red troll she has just drawn walking around her New York neighborhood street wrecking havoc and playing in the water of a broken fire hydrant is just the start of goofy things that happen in this book. Come to find out, Willow is some sort of magic user that has been part of her family for...forever. And it gets better, her grandmother who is considered a witch, really is a witch and so are most of the people in her home of Paumanok Harbor. I liked Willow's little awakening to how the things she found typical growing up are really due to the magic powers of those around her. Her mother really can communicate with animals and she isn't crazy. I liked this element in the book.
Grant is the love interest in the book and I wasn't thrilled with him. He was almost a little too wimpy for me and considering I didn't consider Willow a force to be reckoned with both main character can off a little weak. In general through, I enjoyed their story. The action was what moved this story forward for me and I can be happy with that.
While not perfect, Trolls in the Hamptons was a fun and light read. It gets 3.5 Stars.
Willow Tate, graphic novelist, lives in her family's old New York apartment, envies her cousin Susan, and tries to cope with her odd family, who all have special gifts (grandma's a herbalist; Mom is kind of a "dog whisperer"). Belatedly, Willow discovers she has her own gift working on a new idea, she draws a red troll--who promptly appears in real life, wreaking havoc on her neighborhood.
Via a sexy British representative of a hush-hush Department of Unexplained Events, Willow learns she's a Visualizer, someone who can bring a fantasy world alive. And, though desperately reluctant, she becomes involved with a kidnapped child, a boy Agent Grant tells her is being forced to break the barriers between the magic world and the human world. The more Willow tries to ignore the threat, the more it is brought home to her.
This is pleasant fantasy fluff with a strong romance novel element (Chapter 24 has a really steamy sex scene). Willow is a plucky but flawed heroine, Grant lends the proper male romance counterpart, and there are some funny quirky characters, including Willow's crusty mother, the deceptive "super" of the apartment building across the street from Willow's apartment, and even a three-legged Pomeranian. I'll definitely pick up the sequel, but be warned if you're looking for hard fantasy, this isn't it.
The NYC and Hamptons setting rings true, the fantasy is fast-paced and I enjoyed the light romance. A funny read that's a welcome nice break from vampires and werewolves. And zombies. Go team troll!
I've read most of Barbara Metzger's books and novellas and have loved her characters, writing style, plots. I understand one has to change to grow, and I so want to like Willow Tate. But...
Guess I'll have to read another of the Hamptons and see if she grows on me.
I enjoyed this book. Light, funny read.
