I’ve already read a half dozen bios on Elvis before I got my hands on this one. The bias of this author is evident on the first page and it was rather shocking after having already been through other books. Every page is soaked in contempt and you can easily picture Goldman’s sneer as he wrote this.Goldman really focuses on the negative parts of Elvis and if he was doing a more objective, straightforward description of that, it would be one thing. But he really gets carried away in using pejorative language, and it’s cringeworthy. His writing style is analogous to a salacious gossip column. Having said that, there’s a kernel of truth to some of what he writes about (not all though), but you have to wade past the b.s. It's the awful tone more than anything that caused me to give this book a 2 star rating.
If you are new to Elvis biographies, keep in mind the author’s obvious antipathy toward his subject. It actually would be better if you started with another book like the Last Train to Memphis before tackling this one.

Great book, all your favorite Elvis songs with easy to follow chords notes and lyrics.
This is a re- read for me. I read it when first published. Too much flowery language and personal opinion/bias but good juicy way- too -personal details. (Diapers).
Without a doubt the best book about Elvis ever written. Albert Goldman dose not mince words when He writes about the king.must reading for any Elvis fan.
Excellent book. Very thorough.
What an interesting book!. Albert Goldman is two hands above the best author among a slew of Elvis biographies and autobiographies that I've recently read by his friends, musicians, housekeepers, lovers, and Memphis Mafia. I'm boning up for a book of my own on Elvis and the Memphis Racquetball Mafia. It also entailed interviewing a dozen other pros who played racquetball with Elvis at Graceland including Dr. Nichopoulos and two of E's personal aides whom I know from my own sport days.
Why the three Stars? No one touches Goldman's flourish, however his offbeat personal observations that account for 25% of the book are malarkey. Well written garbage. So, if you want a super literary treatment of Elvis and to be charmed and fooled read this tome, but if you want to know what E was really like read other books by his bodyguards, maids, aides, friends, MM, musicians and step-brothers.
I have read a lot of Elvis books and this one cuts him down on everything.
Though the author clearly wants the readers to see the bad side of Elvis, much of what the author shares has later been retold with sometimes less harshness by the very people that he interviewed for this book. He apparently has a deep seated dislike for Elvis and a desire to want people to view Elvis as a worthless human being with no good human qualities or positive characteristics. This is clear when he repeatedly states that Elvis has no talent in anyway shape or form. I think anyone who took the time to Listen to Elvis recordings in 1960 alone would find that Elvis could use his voice as a beautiful instrument regardless of whether you likes his music or not. I know it has been said that others have come forward to write their own books to set the record straight because of Goldmans "negative book". Priscilla being one of them. Her book Elvis and Me shed a much more negative light on Elvis thant this book. I like the music of Elvis and some of his movies I think this book gives a good insight into one part of the image and the man. I would recomend it.
