There is no table of contents. First, The Introduction, pages 1 to 25, is largely autobiographical with the author’s personal photographs and a description of the filming of The Milagro Beanfield War, and a history of the conflict between the indigenous, mostly Hispanic population and the outsiders who want to develop the Taos area for tourists, as fictionalized by Nichols in his book, The Milagro Beanfield War.
Chapter One, On the Brink of Oceans, pages 29 to 76, has a beautiful photograph at the top of each page with text below describing the author’s life and experiences of the area, written in his poetic style.
Chapter Two, Cycles of Life, continues with photographs and text describing the area in context of the changing seasons.
Chapter Three, continues with more photographs and text of the author’s life, his visiting friends and some of the long time residents.
In Chapter Four, A Future Up for Grabs, the author describes current (1980’s) living conditions in the area and the possibilities of future development.
Chapter Five, We Shall Advance Together, is a synthesis of the topics discussed in the book and summery of the book with speculations on the possibilities of change in the area in the future.
A first person present tense narrative of the authors experience living and raising children in New Mexico and description of the area.
