Bloodfire Blood Destiny Book 1 eBook Helen Harper

MacKenzie Smith has been hidden and protected by a were pack for 17 years. She was abandoned by her mother when she was little, and now she is in danger when an alpha has died under mysterious and vicious circumstances and the Brethren appears. The Brethren is the head council of all were packs, and MacKenzie’s pack fears MacKenzie will be discovered as non-were. (It is against Brethren law for non-weres to be part of any pack.) At the same time, there is also a mandatory contest and interviews for young weres as the Brethren is alway seeking trainees to join the Brethren.

World building and pack laws are detailed besides an investigation involving a mage, blood DNA, etc., and general forensic work. There is rivalry and romance among weres, including perhaps Lord Corrigan, head of the Brethren, who has a strong interest in MacKenzie.

MacKenzie Smith is a headstrong character. She has some flaws, but I like her. She is alone, yet determined. Lord Corrigan is an enigma which is attractive in an alpha of all alphas. I am sure more will be revealed about him in book 2.

This book is just packed with relationships, questions, mysteries, etc. I was anxious for MacKenzie throughout the story, and the ending was a big surprise for me. I must read Book 2.

Bloodfire Blood Destiny Book 1 eBook Helen Harper Reviews

This book was ok. The setting and world were interesting. I was very interested in learning more about the main pack from London. The story was pretty decent. However I had some issues with the main character, Mack. She had an overwhelming temper and sense of independence combined with a lack of ability to intelligently plan. This along with a strong disdain for the abilities, skills and willingness of people she didn't know meant she was often causing trouble and messing up other people's plans to deal with things. It was very off putting, and I wound up skimming through a lot of scenes.

As another reviewer put it there are Reasons for her temper, but (in my opinion) good Reasons don't make it any more enjoyable to read about.

Mack's friendships with others was a little off too. We're told that she's friends with various people, but see very few friendly interactions between herself and others.

Overall, an interesting world and side characters, so I'll give book 2 a shot and hope that Mack sees some growth that includes anger management and a stronger willingness to include others in her plans and life.
I am happily surprised with Bloodfire, as it is in a genre with some very heavy hitters and the book is able to hold it's own. It is actually an urban fantasy along the lines of Chloe Neill, Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs when it comes to relationships between the characters. Yes their is the potential for romance just as each of those authors first books had potential for romance but the romance did not overshadowing the urban fantasy/paranormal elements of the story. In this book Harper's world revolves around a shape shifting pack in Cornwall England, but she has added the bones to expand the world beyond shape shifters. I can already feel a long came coming in the relationship between the female protagonist Mack and Corrigan the male protagonist and the Lord Alpha of the shifter world. They both clashed wonderfully, like when Merit of The Chicagoland Vampires first met Ethan Sullivan. I do prefer the long game to urban fantasy romance if the same characters are the main focus for the entire series. The build up and character development makes books like these worth the wait.

Now I am not saying this book is perfect as it could have been fleshed out in a few places. I do wonder about shifters having their own net, which seemed a major security risk and the idea of the pack being seen as a cult did not seem plausible, but I took the twist and turns in good faith that the author will expand on her world as I continue read the series.

The book was free on as of 12/15/2015.
I didn’t set out to write nearly a whole review about a secondary character but here it is… Alex is my dude! How fantastic is he! I sincerely hope he continues to be Mack’s sidekick throughout the series because a fierce, ‘runs towards danger’ woman and a deceivingly powerful, ‘Scooby Doo and Shaggy’ mage is so much fun. There are some serious Kate Daniels vibes going on with this book (another 5 star series but on a whole other level) but it was unique things like werehamster lotion and Alex that have made me desperate to read the next book in the series as soon as possible.

Recommended? Well… this book is free and the whole series is on kindle unlimited. If you like urban fantasy, give it a try! For another story with a strong heroine trying to hide her nature and the Beast Lord that irks her greatly, try Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. For a more zany taste of Helen Harper, read Box of Frogs about a woman, possibly a superhero, who wakes up with a dead body and no memory of how she got there or has magical powers.

“It’s just that I find myself wanting to stick around. You never know when there might be a damsel in distress who needs me to run away in the opposite direction for her.”
Bloodfire isn't just another shifter book. It actually has everything! Vampires, gods, demi-gods, werepanthers, werewolves, and even werehamsters. Oh, and that's definitely not all, Harper manages to come up with all kinds of different creatures. Her imagination is just out of this world, and the descriptions are absolutely amazing!

There were definitely some crazy parts in Bloodfire, but the way Harper described things and the imagery developed actually made it believable (crazy, I know)! Her character Mackenzie is extremely developed. She is a fiery hot-head with a temper, but is also extremely loyal and caring. She will risk anything and everything to protect those that she loves. I dare you to read this book and not root for her!

I wish that I had gotten to know the other characters in the book better, but I guess I'll just have to read the next book to find out more. I mean it is a series, everything can't just be revealed in book 1. You need to be kept on your toes, and Harper does just that! I can't wait for more!
