Reading this book is like listening to Mr. Paulson's tale of wondrous dogs he has encountered in his life: His colloquial English writing style is all the more realistic and straightforwardly addressed to readers' hearts, leaving strong imprints in their minds without elaborate metaphor. Mr. Paulsen introduces his readers to the dogs that have provided his life with compassion, loyalty, faithfulness, and joy, the virtues which only humans are thought to be endowed with. Take Ike, the black Lab who appeared out of the blue to console the author's lonely heart and become a good friend; and Josh, an incredibly smart and remarkably faithful Border Collie, who was not only a good herding dog but also a loyal friend. I would dare say that these wonder dogs were his saving grace that helped him to find his calling as a fine American writer.Tags : My Life in Dog Years [Gary Paulsen] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. My Life in Dog Years Gary Paulsen 9780440414711 Books Reviews
If you have ever loved a dog, or known someone who truly has, this is the book to buy and read. No author connects more with his dogs, or enjoys and celebrates them more, than Gary Paulsen. We have bought six or seven copies of this book to give as gifts over the years. And many of the gift recipients went out and bought copies of this book for their dog-loving friends. The old bromide about "you will laugh...you will cry", is a pretty safe prediction here. I defy you to not connect with your feelings about all the loved animals of your past after you read My Life in Dog Years.
These are short stories that are true. Some will bring a tear to your eye, others will have you laughing out loud. Children from 8-100 will enjoy these. I didn't hold the key too long! These are just great stories for just about any age. I taught school for 33 years. I read it to my students many times and never got tired of them. A retired friend and I were talking the other day, and she remarked that it was time for her to reread it again. She's giving to her grandson for Easter, but I'm sure her older granddaughter will be reading too!
Gary Paulsen is one of our most talented fiction writers of today. You get riveted from the very first page of every book he has written. This is especially true with his Hatchet book and all the other books that follow Brian's story of living and surviving alone in the wilderness of Minnesota and Canada. His "Life in Dog Years" recaptures his relationships with the dogs in his life. I can relate to his love of dogs (and all animals) their different personalities and how they each came into Gary's life and what role they played. Highly recommended.
The stories were great and an easy read. I love all dogs, but if you have once or twice in a lifetime been gifted with the friendship of an animal that seems not just human but more than human -- maybe even heaven sent -- then you will love a couple of these in particular.
I depend on books by Gary Paulsen to help keep my students engaged in reading. I have used this particular book for several seventh and eighth grade students who love dogs, but dislike reading.
Each chapter is a story about an unforgettable dog Gary Paulsen has had in his life. My students like that they can read one chapter at a time and have a whole story within that chapter. I like that I am offering my students a well-written, engaging book that gives them the practice they need, as well as the confidence and courage to try to read other books.
(I also regularly share "Hatchet," "The Island," "Lawnboy" and other Paulsen books with my students.)
If you've read Paulsen's chronicles of his training for and first running of the Iditarod (Winterdance), you know this man tells it all, even if it makes him look stupid or crazy. But, man, what an adventurous life and terrific story-teller, with heart-breakingly beautiful prose. The best thing about this book is that I can't keep this book on my shelf! I teach 6th grade and every year at least 10-15 kids check this book out from my little classroom library. I usually just have to get one kid to read it, then he'll tell his buddies, and then it's passed around like a hot potato. This is my third copy in 4 years--they wear it out! Great for reluctant readers, especially boys.
This is such a great book. I am a substitute teacher and one day the fifth grade class was doing a lot of quiet independent work, so I picked up this book from the teacher's desk . It's not a long book so I was able to get through a lot of it. Each chapter is a story about one of the author's dogs throughout his life, whether he owned the dog or maybe just had a short encounter with one.
I immediately scanned it into my cart to buy for my son. I am not a dog lover by any means and this book made me want to run out and get one. It is so heartwarming and real. - great book for all ages!
